Such a stark contrast to my day job at the prison! In late 2016, after 11.5,years of working for the DOC, my dream of quitting my day job at the prison finally came true! With the support of my wonderful husband, I have been able to focus full time on creating jewelry. When I first begain making jewelry, I never thought I would be able to do some of the things I can do now! It feels incredibly empowering to have an idea for a piece, sketch a design, and actually fabricate that idea out of raw metals and stone into a finished piece of jewelry. I love everything about my craft-the design process, choosing the materials for a piece, the fabrication process, putting the finishing touches on it, and even the packaging, but the best part is seeing or hearing from the recipient that they love their new piece of jewelry and that wearing it brings them as much joy as it did to me when I was creating it. I had opened up a creative side of me that I never knew I had, and the ideas for new pieces started flowing. My first pieces weren’t great, but I was already hooked on the feeling that making them evoked and on the excitement of trying and learning new techniques. So, after a particularly hard day at work, I made a stop at a local art/craft supply store and bought my first coil of copper wire, some beads, and a few tools to make my first wire wrapped ring from a tutorial I had found online. Each day working at the prison, I felt like a small piece of me was dying inside, and it came to a point where I just had to do something to revive my spirit. Making jewelry was something that I always wanted to try, but never had the courage to actually do it until late 2013. I never thought of myself as artistic or crafty, but have always had a love for the arts, fashion, and creating something out of nothing.
I found my passion a little late in life when I felt a strong need for a creative outlet to deal with the stress of feeling trapped in a thankless job at a state prison. I didn’t always know I wanted to be a jewelry artist. I am completely self taught and work out of my home studio set up in York County, PA. I’m Lori, the one woman show behind LoMo Studio’s jewelry.
